December

SCS Holiday Card Contest - Winter themed-not religious. GHS Senior Peter Boyd won last year!

Germantown Holiday Card Contest - There are many samples that are framed in the hallway downstairs (A building) of past winners of this contest. This was judged by as a craft piece last year rather then a fine art work. The winning piece was extremely cleanly drawn and all of the works are on the CAPA website.

Scholastic Art Awards - The competition for the drawing and painting is the most challenging in this competition. Any strong submission in functional clay won a gold key because unfortunately there is not as much competition. If possible also have students submit life sized fashion designs that are in scale and made of recycle products.

For the drawing and painting – At the local level they are looking for large realistic textured self-portraits with extremely high level of technique and design. Most of the local gold keys went to students who did portraits in charcoal. At the national level they are really looking the same technical skill plus a deep conceptual meaning.

For portfolios – All of the IB seniors have enough work at this point to put together a portfolio for scholastic. This would be good practice for them for the Exhibition upload for IB. Their Artists statements that accompany their art selections needs to include their motivation for what they created overall, their artistic influence, a description of their process, and justification of their design, and media choice. Not all works in their portfolio should be charcoal drawings for Scholastic. It should include several practices including drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic design, and 3D if applicable.
